Casualties of Pretty Things -- Chapter Ten

Image
If this is your first visit to Mandatory Midnight don't just dive in. Read CASUALTIES OF PRETTY THINGS from the beginning.
A psychotic father kidnaps teenage girls and uses them as sex dolls in place of the daughter he raped, while her guardian will stop at nothing to find her. When sixteen-year-old Cybil believes her mother was killed by the father who raped her she runs away from Deloris, a woman who loves her like her own daughter and who operates the House of Rahab, a halfway home for young women with backgrounds in prostitution. On the streets Cybil finds the friendship she needs, only to lose it when her father finds her. Now Deloris must overcome an ingenious captor and bring Cybil home.

Cybil rummaged through the trash behind the restaurant where her father Carl abducted Denise, familiar ground for her. She found some partially eaten food and bit into it. She chewed it slowly, and swallowed hard. At her feet was her backpack, whic…

Nosferatu's Werewolf -- The Graphic Novel ?

If I were to produce my own graphic novel it may look something like this, and would be based on Nosferatu's Werewolf.

This is not horror art, no. More like fan-art of an original concept. I'm a big fan of REH, Conan the Barbarian, and the John Milius film. If Mandatory Midnight was ever going to cover a book that isn't directly horror, Hour of the Dragon would be it. However, I'd have to reconsider because not only is Conan not horror, Howard was a racist. And I just preached at you about Lovecraft being a racist.
Anyway, the idea here is that Marvel should publish an adaptation of Hour of the Dragon (AKA Conan the Conqueror). I think they may have done that in the past but this would be a direct sequel to the original Milius film. The four diamonds in the title logo is a reference to the four kingdoms Conan conquered under his rule. The lion is, of course, Amra. We would see Conan conquer, rule, and eventually abandon the crown.
In the opening scene we would see a party of raiders gathered around a camp fire at night. They've just departed from pillaging a local village where t…

LOVECRAFT WAS A RACIST

Image
I have been asked why I have not yet covered H.P. Lovecraft. Certainly At the Mountains of Madness is considered mandatory reading?
I cannot argue that the man’s work was (and remains!) influential on horror literature. And, yes. If I were to choose a single work of his to feature it would be Mountains.
Truth is, I have something personal against writing about a known racist.
Was Lovecraft a Racist? Lovecraft's first poem that was not self-published appeared in a local newspaper in 1912. Called Providence in 2000 A.D., the poem envisioned a future where people of English heritage were displaced by immigrants. Surviving unpublished poems from this period, most notoriously "On the Creation of Niggers", were also emblematic of the xenophobia and racism inherent in much of Lovecraft's later work.
There are numerous examples of his racism you can find on your own.
If I were to write about Lovecraft and his work I feel as if I would have to defend his racism. The above fac…
